How To Be Posh…To Give Or Not To Give?

Wanna be posh?  Try spearheading a humanitarian cause/organization you are passionate about or simply volunteer. Give more value than you receive. There is so much unspeakable joy that comes from giving. And when you keep giving, you’ll find that you actually receive a lot more in return, in spades.


Start in your own community and give where you live first. What’s my rationale? Would you pay someone elses rent and utilities before you paid your own? I think not!  Therefore, make it a point to give locally, regionally, nationally then internationally.

Creating Happiness and Focusing On The Things That Really Matter?

I have always watched people. Okay, not in a stalker, or night watchman type of way.  But you know what I mean. Put simply, I mean, watching people’s actions, observing how people respond to other people and situations and checking people for consistency. If I had to make a guess, I’d say my sociology degree from good old, SUNY Brockport College, is partially responsible for my passion for the study of people in groups. However, it certainly goes back further than that. I’ve always payed careful attention to people and although I can talk your ear off if given the chance, I’d much rather watch other people interact with each other. I generally listen more than I talk. So, I suppose it was not an  accident when I realized that lately,many people seem to either completely lack focus on anything or they’re focused on the wrong things altogether. As a whole, many people don’t seem to be focused on the big picture in life.

Whether intentionally or unintentionally, in todays society people are pulled in so many different directions, is one reason for lack of focus on important things like family, relationships, education or other things that should have priority in ones life. This period of time is known as the “Age of Distraction.” Technology alone (cell phones, computers & laptops, internet, iPods, game systems) all can be major distractions in your life? Trust me, I know. Between my facebook profile (which I purposely neglect), and my facebook fan page, twitter and wordpress blog (all for business) things can get hectic. Do I think people abuse social networking sites? Absolutely. But that’s a different topic for a different day.

Okay… back to the original topic because afterall, this is a blog about lifestyle management. What is being big picture focused? Being big picture focused means focusing on the things in life that matter. Here it is in a nutshell: You can either set your eyes on the big things or get hung up by the nitty gritty details. The former will help you get a lot more out of life than the latter. Focus on the big rocks in life and put first things first.

Practice the 80/20 rule – focus on the 20% things that give you the 80% fulfillment in life. I guarantee this one change will increase your level of happiness.

Incorporating Vegetables Into Your Diet

I’ve been looking for a way to incorporate vegetables into my diet without always having them as sides. Why? Because if you’re anything like me, you equate sides with not being as important as the main food, meat. This is just not so and I’m trying to change this mind-set.  I recently found a recipe for vegetable whole wheat spaghetti over at I love spaghetti and I can’t wait to try a dish of it without the pork pepperoni, meatballs or… yes folks, spare ribs! This sounds like a much healthier alternative. Thank you Talin.

Water with lemon. Make it fun!

#1: Drink ONE MORE glass of water than you usually do.
We’ve heard it time and time again (and you know it’s true): water is good for you. Forget it, it’s GREAT for you! Most of us don’t get enough. Your body is made up of mostly water, and it needs water to function properly and keep you in good health. Now, this tip can go two ways. If you NEVER drink water, start off by drinking a glass a day. If you do drink water, add another glass. Add fun stuff like cucumbers, lemons, oranges, limes and even frozen berries to your water to make it more “enjoyable”. But either way, drink up!

Most of us are looking forward to setting some goals for 2012 and tackling them come January 1st. It just seems right. New year, new start, new goals, new opportunity. Right? It just seems so perfect to start back at 1. Well, I’d like to  jump the gun a bit and challenge you all to do something different… Why not start NOW!? Crazy, huh? Well, not really. If you start making small changes now, (like, today!) by the time the new year hits, you’ll have already mastered them and made big difference in your fitness life. I’m a strong believer that making small changes, little by little, will not only boost your confidence in your ability to meet a goal, but also your resolve to change your life. So often in life, I hear folks describing situations in their lives. Perhaps you have  a new boyfriend or girlfriend, you found a new bff to hangout with. Maybe you decided to splurge on yourself and spent a couple thousand too many. Or, you’re experiencing new found freedom due to divorce or going to college and being separated from parents for the very first time. Fill in the ___________. I’m sure something here applies to everyone in some way, myself included; and if it doesn’t apply to you, it applies to someone you know.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned is certain about life, it’s that life can present itself in the funniest ways. What may seem like good fortune may very well be just that. If that is the case that is awesome in every sense of the word. We may be elated about recent occurrences in our lives. However,we may be doubting or questioning such things for whatever reason. Intuition, perhaps? Everyone has it, some more than others. I am one of a dying breed that still believes people instinctively know when something is right or wrong, they simply choose to ignore the signs.

No matter your unique situation, whether things are going well or not so well, I encourage prayer, positivity and even wishful thinking. Why? Because there are so many things going on in the lives of people, on a day-to-day basis. But I encourage these things for another reason as well. Utilizing these things keep the mind healthy and are good for your spirit.

As a person who is setting their sights on doing better and being better, I caution you to look at your life circumstances (situations) with discernment. There are things happening in your life may feel so good. Trust me I know. So I can identify wholeheartedly (and I say that with a smile). However, if you done even a little bit of living, you have to know that there’s more to this story called “life”, than just feeling good.

I’m A Runner Now And I’m Lovin’ It.

I’ve learned that exercise and fitness does not have to involve any sort of special equipment, fancy coordination, or the stress and terror that having a team depending on your performance brings. To be completely honest with you, I don’t like any of that stuff.

I’m still flirting with the idea of incorporating yoga into my schedule on a regular basis and I’ve been toying with the idea of running for a while. I even started trying last summer before I went back to work and let it fizzle out. You see, I just kept having visions of my lungs struggling for air, my hair sweating out, and the embarrassment of finishing last.

I’ve always known just how great running can be for you mentally and physically. So, one of my girlfriends and I decided that we would start running. The dilemma was this:  when you’ve never run before you often need a certain level of motivation and encouragement to get through your runs, especially your first run. It’s hard to get that from someone whose not a runner. We really wanted to take things to the next level, so my friend suggested a national group with a local presence in Charlotte called, Black Girl Run.

So, what exactly is Black Girl Run? BGR is a running group that began in 2009 as an effort to tackle the obesity epidemic in the African American community and encourage new and veteran runners. Its mission is to encourage African American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. Black Girls Run! has several meetups in North, East and South Charlotte. There are currently over 500 members of the group who run throughout the week to promote healthy lifestyles.

The runs typically are about 3 miles. Even non-runners are encouraged to participate to build endurance.

My experience lastnight was that all were welcome no matter your level. The women were very encouraging and used several strategies for keep participants motivated. Most, importantly, I was able to run at a pace that I felt comfortable with. 

I’ll tell you what I learned lastnight. Running is mental. What do I mean by that? I’m saying that running is just as much physical as it is mental. It’s about willing yourself forward, keeping your legs moving to get over the next hill, survive the heat (the cold is easy because you’ll warm up very fast), and being diligent enough to stick to your pacing, hydration, and nutrition plan. Feeling winded wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I got over it and I finished last, but I finished. As, far as your hair is concerned, girl wrap that stuff and keep it moving. I did. So, yes folks, I’m officially a runner and it feels great!
